You know how important it is to exfoliate your skin, but sometimes using a loofah or scrubbing cloth is a little too harsh. The good news is, there’s a gentler way to exfoliate your skin and also keep it smooth and glowing every day.

Dry brushing is an Ayurvedic technique that not only buffs away dead skin cells but also improves circulation. You can do it everyday or every other day without irritating and damaging your skin — as long as you use the right approach. 

Here are some essential dos and don’ts when dry brushing:

DO dry brush before you shower. Your skin needs to be perfectly dry before you brush away or you won’t be able to pick up the flaky and scaly skin on the skin’s surface. Avoid using any type of moisturizer or body oils.

DON’T brush over damaged skin. If you have acne, breakouts, or flare ups, avoid irritating the skin with a dry brushing routine. You’ll want to protect and moisturize those areas as much as possible instead.

DO use an upward motion. One of the benefits of dry brushing is lymphatic drainage. You can move lymph through the body just with a light touch of a brush. Use an upward motion so you’re always brushing towards your heart.

DON’T use too much pressure. Since you want to increase circulation and move lymphatic fluid through the body, you only need to use light pressure when brushing. Use small, gentle strokes across your limbs, chest, upper back, stomach and shoulders to get the most benefits.

DO follow up with a good moisturizer. After you’re done showering or soaking in the tub, nourish your skin with a good moisturizer or body oil. Scented body oils and lotions will sink into your pores after a good exfoliation session.
