As the saying goes, you are what you eat, and that couldn’t ring truer when it comes to skin health.

Whether you’re vegan, doing keto, or eat a little bit of everything, all the foods you eat are metabolized in ways that either support skin cell regeneration…or trigger inflammation and cellular breakdown.

The good news is, summertime is the perfect season for stocking up on skin-boosting, antioxidant-rich foods that help to keep skin glowing. Loading up on leafy greens and whipping up a detox smoothie are some good places to start.

Here’s our recommended grocery list for gorgeous summer skin:

Strawberries

Strawberries are not only low in sugar but also contain compounds that help keep skin looking smooth. Silica, a trace mineral found in strawberries (as well as mangoes and cucumbers), helps support connective tissue health. You need good amounts of this in your diet to maintain good skin elasticity as you age. Plus, they’re a source of Vitamin C — something we all need for healthy skin. Add strawberries to your morning shake or try a strawberry salad a few times a week.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a great source of lycopene, an antioxidant linked to reducing the effects of sun damage. In addition to throwing some extra tomatoes in your salad, you could make a gazpacho soup or enjoy some non-alcoholic Bloody Mary’s made with tomato juice to fill up on some much-needed nutrients this summer.

Turmeric

It’s more of a spice than a food, but still needs to be on your summer grocery list! Turmeric contains curcumin, an anti-inflammatory that can help relieve inflammation in the body and also reduce irritation when applied topically. You can cook with turmeric to add a mild flavor and yellow color to dishes, or simply enjoy a cup of Golden Milk or tea made with turmeric.

Cherries

Say goodbye to dry and flaky skin by enjoying some cherries this season. Cherries are high in vitamin C and potassium, two nutrients that are essential for keeping your skin hydrated and looking youthful. Tart cherries can be the perfect summer snack to ward off sugar cravings and sweeter cherries are a great healthy dessert on a hot summer day.

Avocadoes

A great source of healthy fat, avocados may just be your go-to food to keep you feeling full and also keeping skin looking radiant. Healthy fats have been linked to healthy skin and monounsaturated fats have anti-inflammatory effects. Whether you’re reaching for some avocado on toast or an extra serving of guacamole, be sure to include this on your grocery list for a wealth of benefits that support skin health!
